While playing your favourite slot, have you ever wondered where it came from? Who made it? How did it end up on your favourite casino? How come the same slot is also on a whole lot of other casinos?
Perhaps you haven’t asked these questions, and frankly don’t even care. But you probably aren’t reading this page either…
The reason the same slot can appear on multiple online casinos (have you ever seen one that doesn’t have Starburst on it?), is because the casinos do not create the games themselves. They leave it to the experts – the software developers, who design and develop the games, package them into platforms and sell licenses to the casino operators. Some casinos stick with one developer’s platform, throw a bit of branded jazz over it (“a skin”) and chuck it out. There you have it… a casino.
However, the best casinos have the best range of games. Not the most games and the most platforms (like throwing spaghetti against the wall to see what will stick). Rather, they curate a quality compendium of games in keeping with the feel and the brand of the casino.
When playing your favourite slots, it worth noting the developer, whose name will often appear as the game is loading. You may even begin to see a pattern developing. Once you’ve latched onto your favourite developers, you won’t be able to contain your anticipation when they release their latest, newest slots.
So who are they? On this page, we’ve listed the eight software developers that you unequivocally need to know:
Based in Canada, Amaya were formed in 2004. You may have heard of the trials and tribulations of its ex-CEO David Baazov and you may know that they struck a deal with Aristocrat games to bring their slot games online. You probably won’t know that they bought software application provider Cryptologic. Games to look out for: Wild Panda Slot.
IGT (International Gaming Technology)
IGT is the world’s largest slot machine manufacturer. Formerly Vegas born and bred, it was bought by GTECH who in turn had been bought by Lottomatic, an Italian lottery company. Over the years, they created many legendary slot machines including Wheel of Fortune, based on the classic American TV show and Cleopatra, the most searched online slot in the UK.
A leading Software developer, Microgaming were formed in 1994 on the Isle of Man. Their Quickfire platform is particularly popular. It is widely licenced due to the simplicity of operating it. Games to look out for: Jungle Jim: El Dorado, Dragonz and Hot as Hades.
NetEnt (Net Entertainment)
Founded in 1996 in Sweden, NetEnt are pretty much the self-professed market leaders in the gaming platform world. Though they launched their first casino all the way back in 2002, NetEnt are at the cutting edge with some of the most anticipated new releases including the Motorhead, Guns n Roses and Jimi Hendrix trilogy released in 2016.
NetEnt also develop impressive Live Dealer games and Pooled Jackpot Slots – the most famous, Mega Fortune, entered the Guinness Book of World Records when a player won a jackpot of £15 million. Other Games to look out for – Gonzo’s Quest and the inimitable Starburst.
NextGen Gaming (NYX)
Another Swedish company, Next Gen’s OGS, open gaming system, is a well-regarded multi-channel gaming system. Veterans of the online game development (founded 1999), their games to look out for are: Foxin Wins, Witch Riches and Merlin’s Magic.
In 1999, Playtech were founded in Estonia, but now find themselves based on the Isle of Man. They proudly wear the label of “world leading supplier of online gaming software.” Games to look out for: the Age of Gods collection including Fate Sisters and King of Olympus. Also look out for the Ultimate power jackpot.
A US lottery company founded in 1974, their contemporary portfolio includes the game developers Bally and WMS. Games to look out for: Montezuma.
Swedish young guns (est. 2013), they ditched Flash after just a year, forming a portfolio entirely built upon HTML 5. Already award winners and making serious waves in the industry, the games to look out for include: Beauty and the Beast, Legend of the Golden Monkey and Alchymedes.
Fairness, Testing and eCOGRA
The UK Gambling Commission and their foreign regulatory counterparts require software to meet sufficient standards of fairness. This, specifically, is stipulated in the Gambling Commission’s Licensing Conditions and Codes of Practice, Condition 2.3.1, relating to gambling software licences and remote operating licences:
“Licensees must comply with the Commission’s technical standards and with the requirements set by the Commission relating to the timing and procedures for testing.”
eCOGRA is one such independent and certified testing agency. An eCOGRA sticker at the foot of a casino homepage can go far to assure the player that the games are fair, unbiased and statistically random.
What does it mean? What does it do?
eCOGRA is the digital hooded snake swallowing bad eggs; the bacteria sinking swindlers. It stands for eCommerce Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance and they have provided their services to some of the largest software suppliers including NetEnt and Microgaming.
They take a holistic approach to auditing including an assurance that the games are fair. They must be impervious to criminal tampering, ensure a secure environment and have a robustly tested RNG (Random Number Generator) and RTP (Return to Player).
